Africa Awaits – Our Safari Adventure in Zimbabwe & Botswana
Africa had always been a dream for us, and this April we finally made it a reality! From the thunder of Victoria Falls to elephants wandering through camp in Hwange, every single day delivered one of those “pinch-me” moments you never forget.
The Power of Victoria Falls
We began at Victoria Falls, where the mighty Zambezi River crashes over the cliffs creating clouds of spray and a roar you can hear from miles away. Standing on the rainforest path, completely drenched by the mist, was exhilarating. But the true scale of the falls really comes alive from the air on a helicopter flight or drifting down the river at sunset – both magical perspectives of one of the world’s natural wonders.
Into the Wild at Hwange National Park
Next stop: Hwange National Park, and this was where Africa truly stole our hearts. Unlike some of the busier parks where dozens of vehicles crowd around a sighting, Hwange feels raw and wild. Often it was just us, our guide, and the animals – an incredibly intimate safari experience.
There were countless moments that took our breath away. Watching a pride of 22 lions move silently through the bush… seeing them make a kill, the sounds and energy of it all was unforgettable. Dining by lantern light as elephants padded silently up to the waterhole beside us. Walking on foot with a highly trained guide, learning to read the tracks of a rhino or follow the call of a bird. Every drive felt like an amazing adventure written just for us.
The Heart of Africa – People & Conservation
One of the most rewarding parts of our journey was meeting the local communities connected to the parks. Visiting a village, being welcomed into a chief’s homestead, and watching children dance with such joy was a highlight. Knowing that our safari stay helps support schools, healthcare and vital conservation projects – like the rhino sanctuary we visited – made the experience even more meaningful.
Chobe, Botswana – Elephants at Sunset
After Zimbabwe, we crossed into Botswana’s Chobe region – home to the largest elephant population in the world. There’s nothing quite like gliding along the river at sunset, wine in hand, as herds of elephants wade across in the golden light. Hippos yawned, crocodiles sunned themselves, and giraffes bent elegantly to drink – all against the backdrop of a fiery African sky. It was pure magic.
Where we stayed
After days filled with thrilling game drives and awe-inspiring encounters, retreating to our luxury lodges was pure indulgence. From private plunge pools and riverside views to gourmet dining under the stars, every detail was designed for comfort and elegance through Prestige Safaris. Evenings were spent sipping fine wines by the firepit, watching elephants wander by, or simply unwinding in spacious suites that blended safari style with five-star luxury. At Camelthorn, the wow factor reached its peak as we stood just metres away from reintroduced white rhinos. Walking quietly alongside these gentle giants, knowing how rare and fragile their future is, was profoundly moving – a privilege that left us both humbled and inspired. These stays weren’t just a place to sleep – they were an unforgettable part of the journey, the perfect way to end each adventure-filled day in Africa.
Final Reflections
This safari reminded us that Africa isn’t just a destination – it’s an experience that stays with you forever. The power of Victoria Falls, the thrill of a lion sighting, the gentle rumble of elephants close by, the warmth of the people – it’s impossible to put into words how moving it is until you’re there.
If Africa has ever been on your bucket list, don’t wait. Zimbabwe and Botswana offer some of the most authentic, soul-stirring safari experiences you can imagine – wild, intimate, and utterly unforgettable.
