My Dream Birthday in Switzerland
My very first trip to Europe started in Switzerland, the place I’ve always dreamed of visiting. Back when I first began working in the travel industry last year, I was asked where in the world I’d go if time and money were no issue, and my answer was simple: Switzerland. Fast forward 8 or 9 months and I found myself celebrating my 21st birthday surrounded by the beautiful Swiss Alps. Dreams do come true!
Getting there
With the current airspace closures, I ended up changing my flights from Emirates to Singapore Airlines, which turned out to be an amazing experience. Flying economy, I was pleasantly surprised by the legroom, comfort, and delicious meals. A little insider tip: signing up for Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer membership gives you perks like free Wi-Fi in-flight, definitely worth it for a long-haul flight.
Zurich
I spent 3 nights in Zurich with my mum, Georgette (Home & Afar Travel Director), which was the perfect introduction to Switzerland. Zurich is such a charming base: beautiful shops, cozy cafes, and stunning scenery are all within easy reach. We stayed at the Ruby Mimi Hotel, a gorgeous building that used to be an old movie cinema. It had a lovely cafe/bar and a brasserie below where we enjoyed my special birthday dinner.
Must-Do Day Trips from Zurich
Lucerne & Mt. Titlis
This was an absolute highlight. From Lucerne’s picturesque streets to the gondolas and cable cars at Mt. Titlis, the mountain views are cinematic. Snow-capped peaks, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear skies—it’s like stepping into a movie.
Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen & Grindelwald
Another day of jaw-dropping scenery! From waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen to the Alpine charm of Grindelwald, every turn is postcard-worthy. The Swiss mountains truly feel like a fairy-tale landscape you never want to leave.
On day 4 Mum headed home and I made my way to Basel for my Avalon Waterways adventure. The coach ride from Zurich took about an hour and a half with the Avalon crew, a smooth start to the next chapter of my European journey.
