30 Years, One Island: Our 7‑Night Anniversary Escape to Club Med Kani, Maldives
March was the perfect time to press pause on life and travel to the Maldives; it just so happened to coincide with something truly special- our 30th wedding anniversary. We arrived to turquoise water and palm trees and couldn't wait to experience 7 blissful nights at Club Med Kani in the Maldives.
From the moment we arrived by speedboat, watching the island appear out of the Indian Ocean, we knew we had chosen well.
As a couple in our mid‑50s, we wanted luxury without stiffness, adventure without exhaustion, and everything to be easy. Club Med Kani delivered on all fronts.
The all‑inclusive format was a huge part of the appeal. No signing bills, no juggling reservations, no planning every hour- just waking up and deciding how relaxed or active we felt that day. The island itself is compact and beautiful, with overwater villas stretching out across the lagoon and shaded sandy paths connecting everything.
March was an ideal month to visit: warm days, calm seas, and just enough breeze to keep things comfortable.
Let’s talk food- you do not go to a Club Med to go on a diet, the Food is sensational.
Dining at Club Med Kani was surprisingly varied and consistently excellent. The main restaurant offered rotating themed nights, meaning we were never bored, even over a full week. Fresh seafood, made‑to‑order grills, Asian flavours, and indulgent desserts were always on offer.
Top food tips:
- Don’t skip lunch- it’s often quieter than dinner and just as good.
- The freshly grilled fish is a standout and changes daily.
- Try the local Maldivian curries when available- gentle heat and full flavour.
- Arrive a little earlier for dinner if you prefer a calmer atmosphere.
And of course, the wine, beer, cocktails, and coffee were all included- which added to the celebratory mood.
One of our anniversary treats was a couples massage at the spa, the therapists were highly skilled and attentive, and the experience felt genuinely indulgent rather than rushed.
Book early in your stay, especially for couples treatments. Sunset‑time appointments are magical if you can get one.
Matt being a keen fisherman wanted to experience deep sea fishing in the Maldives, he was very impressed catching several fish. One was kept and the chef prepared it for us for dinner that night. Can't get any fresher than that.
Snorkelling tours were offered twice a day, 10am and 2.30pm. All the equipment is supplied and the crew take you to different spots on the reef. We couldn't believe how clear the waters were and so many fish, turtles, rays and black tip reef sharks (apparently they don't eat people)
Club Med Kani is well known for its surfing access, with world‑class break Nijas. It was easy to access from Club Med by paddle straight off the northern end of Kanifinolhu Island.
If you’re curious but cautious, start with a lesson- or simply enjoy the energy of the surf scene without pressure to participate.
We have been to a few Club Med's before and what we loved the most was finding our own rhythm. Mornings often started with a walk along the beach, some days we joined light activities or snorkelled in the lagoon; other afternoons were devoted entirely to reading, napping, and floating in the water.
Evenings brought sunsets, pre‑dinner drinks, live music, and easy conversation. There was always something happening, but never felt obligated to join in.
Is Club Med Kani Right for Couples in Their 50s? Absolutely yes.
While Club Med has a reputation for being lively, Kani strikes a wonderful balance. There’s energy if you want it, serenity if you don’t, and a wide range of guests celebrating honeymoons, anniversaries, and significant birthdays.
For us, it felt celebratory without being overwhelming, indulgent, without being pretentious- and exactly what our 30th anniversary deserved.
Seven nights at Club Med Kani gave us more than just a holiday; it gave us space to reconnect, reflect, and truly celebrate the journey we’ve shared over 30 years.
Would we go back? In a heartbeat. And next time, we might stay even longer.
