Europe River Cruising with Avalon Waterways by Jonty Southam

This was my very first time travelling to Europe and my first river cruise, sailing aboard the Avalon Envision was an incredible introduction. The experience perfectly combines luxury with the ease of exploring Europe’s iconic Rhine River, allowing you to move seamlessly from one destination to the next.

With a capacity of 166 guests and a strong crew-to-guest ratio, the service onboard is consistently attentive, creating a personalised, luxury experience throughout the journey.

Suites
The Panorama Suites were a real standout. They’re thoughtfully designed to feel spacious, with floor-to-ceiling sliding windows that transform the room into an open, balcony-style space. With the signature window-facing beds, waking up to views, especially when cruising through the Rhine Gorge, was a definite highlight.

For those wanting more space, the Royal Suites offer a significantly larger layout than the Panorama Suites, with expansive living areas and an added sense of comfort.

Spaces to Relax Onboard
Life onboard is easy going, with plenty of spots to unwind:

•             The Club Lounge is open 24/7 for coffee, snacks, or a quiet moment.
•             The Panorama Lounge & Bar is the social hub, with live music, happy hour, and a lively evening atmosphere.
•             The Sky Deck is ideal in good weather - sun loungers, mini golf, a small spa and open-air views.

 Dining to complement each destination
Meals were a real highlight. Menus change daily and are inspired by the regions you’re sailing through. Breakfast and lunch offer both buffet and made-to-order options, while dinner feels more elevated with beautifully presented dishes and attentive service. Drinks are included too! Wine, beer, and even cocktails are part of the daily experience, which adds to the great value of the journey.

Shore Excursions
Avalon Waterways appeals to an active, relatively younger demographic compared to traditional river cruising, with a strong focus on
flexible “Active & Discovery” experiences. Alongside hiking and e-biking, there’s also a great emphasis on food, wine, and beer-focused experiences. Whether that’s wine tasting, local cuisine, or enjoying beer and bites tour in Germany.

Excursions are well curated to suit different interests, from exploring the Storybook Streets of Colmar and Heidelberg Castle to taking in the Rhine Gorge, there really is something for everyone on Avalon.

The App
The AvalonGO app was useful for checking the daily schedule, menus, and port information all in one place. If you didn’t want to us the app you could speak with the onboard team for support instead.

Our tour director, Tamas, was always available near reception and made everything seamless! Whether that meant adjusting excursions or helping secure last-minute spots on shore excursions. That personal, hands-on service really elevated the overall experience.

Final Thoughts
I absolutely loved sailing on the Avalon Envision. Avalon really does a great job of catering to all types of travellers and ages, while still bringing everyone together onboard with a fun atmosphere, with live music, and entertainment.

One thing that really stood out was the time spent in each destination. On several occasions we were docked late into the evening, and we even had an overnight in Amsterdam on the final night, which gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace and make the most of each stop.
