If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring Europe by river cruise, I can honestly say my recent journey onboard Emerald Cruises was such a wonderful way to experience it. Travelling from Budapest through to Passau, every day brought a new city, charming riverside towns and stunning scenery, all while enjoying the comfort and ease of unpacking only once.
Due to the Middle East crisis I changed my flights route and flew to Europe with British Airways via Singapore and London and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The Economy seating on the Dreamliner felt spacious, while the food and service were both very good. For my journey home, I flew with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Kuala Lumpur and was equally impressed. The seats were comfortable, the onboard entertainment excellent and the service fantastic throughout.
After arriving in Budapest, it was a smooth transfer to Emerald Sun, which would be my home for the next seven nights. The ship itself felt modern, elegant and welcoming, with lovely décor throughout the public spaces and exceptional staff who truly made the experience special. I stayed in a Panorama Balcony Suite which, while compact as expected on a river ship, was very comfortable with clever storage and a lovely balcony to enjoy the passing scenery.
One of the things I loved most about river cruising was just how effortless everything felt. Each morning we woke up somewhere new, ready to explore another beautiful destination without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking. Along the way we visited Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Melk, Český Krumlov and Passau, each offering its own unique charm and atmosphere.
The included touring each day was fantastic and really added value to the cruise. Local guides were knowledgeable and engaging, and everything was extremely well organised. I also chose to do a couple of optional excursions, including a visit to the quaint Hungarian town of Szentendre and a traditional Bavarian Beer Hall experience in Passau, both of which were excellent.
Life onboard Emerald Sun was equally enjoyable. The food throughout the cruise was absolutely delicious and one of the real highlights for me. Drinks were included with lunch and dinner, and while there was an optional drinks package available, I found the onboard pricing very reasonable if paying as you go. Between sightseeing, there was also time to relax onboard, enjoy the lounge spaces or simply sit back and watch the beautiful European scenery glide by.
After the cruise I travelled independently to Zurich for a few extra nights to experience Switzerland. While Switzerland is definitely expensive, the scenery more than makes up for it. Day trips to Lucerne and Engelberg were absolutely stunning and a wonderful way to finish the journey.
Overall, I thought Emerald Cruises offered a fantastic balance of comfort, inclusions and value. It’s a wonderful option for travellers wanting a stylish and immersive European river cruise experience without the ultra-luxury price tag. I would happily recommend Emerald to clients looking for a relaxed, well-organised and memorable way to discover Europe.
